When performance appraisal is done, which one rule, personality of the appraisees and appraiser or the performance matrix?

A colleague of mine called me up yesterday to console me. Why? You may asked. She noticed form the latest list of promotion from our Human Resource Department did not have my name. Instead, a colleague of mine whom I brought in to head a new unit which I initiated 2 years ago, got the promotion. What she felt was unjustified for me is that in addition to initiate the new unit, I also transferred about 30% consecutively of my portfolio and accounts for him to start the new unit in the last two years. I must said that this colleague had done a good job in expand the new unit. In contrast, the management felt that my unit did not grow as my portfolio remain status quo as comparatively, mine unit did not grow. They had conveniently forgotten the portfolio I transferred to this new unit.

When Insurance is concerned, one has to be sincere in dealing with your customer!

This morning, I was called by one of my agents to meet her customer to resolve certain issue which had met in a logger head situation. Her customer had insured a fleet of vehicles with our company for quite sometime, due to some oversight, certain new information was not obtained from the insured for approval consideration as the fleet is consider to be of high risk category. However based on our recommendation, the underwriting department accepted with condition that the insured supply us their Risk Management profile. This technical term had created some miscommunication between my executive and the customers executive. The customer had a wrong perception that we were trying to find fault on them by asking their "trade secrets". They were unwilling to provide for fear of breach of contract.

They falsely believe that they have "successfully" completed their education and now is the time for them to make some serious money and have fun. The society is full of people with good education but lack of many other social skill which they did not learn from school.

Always look for the good and encourage your staff to improve and things will naturally get better. Criticism also create resentment and edification enhance morale and performance!

Today, I called a departmental meeting which is long overdue. My department is supposed to hold a monthly meeting and submit the minutes and report. My department has not been submitting the minutes as we did not help a formal meeting where all the staff sit and discussed various issue. My department is a small department with fews person and I hold discussion with different staff at different time when necessary to resolve the matter before it gets out of hand.I for once believe that meeting is necessary but not necessary in formal way and not too often.

Regular meeting is becoming a integral part of every organisation and many organisations are obssessed with meeting; starting with

BOD meeting,
Senior managment meeting,
Product development
Marketing and sales meeting
